Proverbs 24:30-34 I went by the field
of the lazy man, and by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding; 31 And
there it was, all overgrown with thorns; its surface was covered with nettles;
its stone wall was broken down. 32 When I saw it, I considered it well; I looked
on it and received instruction: 33 a little sleep, a little slumber, a little
folding of the hands to rest; 34 So shall your poverty come like a prowler, and
your need like an armed man.
Observing the sloth there is tragedy in the house! According to this passage, this man has no understanding. His place, that where he resides is all grown up and the surface is covered with nettles. It did have a stone wall but that is broken down. Being asleep to responsibility is allowing things to go without attention!
Do we set purpose toward having a job and showing up on time? DO we seek to caring for that which has been given into our hands? Do we struggle on getting up in the morning but chose to stay up late? Proverbs 6:9-11 How long will you slumber ( lie down), O sluggard?
When will you rise from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep----11 So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, and your need like an armed man.
Showing no effort towards living this life given us, really points to that idle behavior, that has no result of good in it! In relating to the one, who, when the alarm goes off in the morning should one readily reach to shut off the alarm and arise to the day the Lord has made? But I wonder how many struggle with that alarm! I wonder how many just want to stay in bed.
What about shopping for groceries or taking care of paying those bills? The sloth appears when one has no zest to take the trash out to the container for the morning's pickup. Some folks choose to be slack by choosing to leave it at the back door as if that trash bab will some how make its way to the bin on its own!
It is one thing if a person is ill and requires help for that daily living assistance. But if it amounts to being lazy, the slacker, the one who really dislikes the whole "work" thing really places one into a new category. Not taking care of daily issues like sacking trash and purchasing food for meals gives others the idea and notably true that we dislike doing that thing.
When our grand-daughter is here for a visit, we have always liked to watch Zootopia with her. Now this last time that she came for a visit, we never had much time for television and movies. The days she was here proved to be days of sun and fun. And although we missed Flash, the sloth from Zootopia, I still thought of that character. You know his name is Flash and he works at the DMV. Still he is a sloth that shows up for work. Yes, I know this is a animated character from a kids movie, but should we not also consider what people see as humor is not really humor. We are made in the image of God and not the image of a sloth.
Seriously, would you want to look like a sloth?
Proverbs 12:27 The lazy man does not roast what he took in hunting, but diligence is man's precious possession. One who is too lazy to to cook the game he went after is truly lazy!
Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all diligence for out of it spring the issues of life.
Yes, it is the heart of man that tells the world what is going in their thinking. Living in that regard is not really living life that God intended. We each have a 'garden' to care for and whatever it looks like, whether a tent, a model home or palace should still be regarded as to be cared for that which we have been given.
The description given in Proverbs 4: 24-27 gives great detail how our lives should be lived with intent and not as a sloth. Verse 24 : Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and put perverse lips far from you. 25 Let your eyes look straight ahead. And your eyelids look right before you. 26 Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. 27 Do not turn to the right or the left; removed your from evil.
Our mouth and lips convey communication. Our eyes look at what has our attention and the feet walk out our behavior. So if we are hooked on television and how to be the next great singer or dancer, and cannot sing or dance, that tent might be where one will find themselves living. What behavior we execute from our thinking then will determine our outcome!
Proverbs 1:16 For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood. 17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird; 18 but they lie in wait for their own blood, they lurk secretly for their own lives. 19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; it takes away the life of its owners.
People can easily be ensnared when they project their wants above truth and what is right for life. Those who are considered the wicked are always looking for easy prey. They will look how to take money from unsuspecting women by making them think they have a love interest in them. There are those seeking who they can prey upon who think they can actually have a singing career and be 'talked into making decisions' that are wrong for the unsuspecting prey. They could be talked into doing that which relieves them of their bank account to zero. And the unsuspecting could have their name exploited by those who do not care about the person nor do they mind taking them to the 'cleaners' in doing so.
It is God and His truth that helps you and I to make godly choices. His truth helps us to not make foolish mistakes. You and I must have the counsel of God to reject the counsel of the ungodly. We should hear God's voice above all others when the wicked appear. And today, they appear in all kinds of places : like schools, churches, hospital and rehabilitation units as well as the parks and gyms, lifting weights and cycles that are regarded as spin class!
If our eye just looks on our wants, those fleeting passions of the flesh, we can find a lot of emptiness and everything void of life. Our salvation was meant to save us from destruction. It was
the plan of God for us to have a relationship with Him. We are to know Him
intimately. Isaiah
26:1-3…..We have a strong city; God makes salvation its walls and
ramparts. 2 Open the gates that the righteous nation may enter, the
nation that keeps faith. 3 You will keep him in perfect peace him whose mind is
steadfast, because he trusts in you. NIV
And our God is not passive in
His love for us but is actively looking for opportunities to do us good,
assuring us in II Chronicles 16:9, "For the eyes of the LORD run to and
fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose
heart is loyal to Him." Not only is it God's will to be a present help in
trouble (Psalm 46:1), this verse in II Chronicles also reveals that He takes it
much further. God is with great effort, illustrated by running to and fro,
actively looking for opportunities to help us.
But if we are too lazy to look into His perfect law of liberty, if we are too intent on being the singer and spend time with watching singers on television or even you-tube, we might certainly miss that which God is willing to show us out of His great love for us.
For truly, God's word exposes that truth but it is only our trust in Him that sees that word executed in our lives. If we live as a sloth, then everything will go to ruin, to weed and to the point of us having no protection. With the wall torn down, one is put in danger of predators coming to take over not only what you have but live in that which you never fought for. For being idle is truly a sad state to be in.
Proverbs 5:1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom; lend your ear to my understanding 2 that you may preserve discretion, and your lips may keep knowledge. When we bow before God and His wisdom...that is...we pay attention, we set our heart on what He gives as truth to us. As we listen to Him, we will not stray from His wise instruction. Without God, we come to death, poverty, condemnation, and disgrace.
Living diligently is living with purpose, is living with lips that keep God's knowledge, that sound like the wisdom of God and behaves in His wisdom that we execute His wisdom on the earth. Amen.
