Jesus walked into Pagan Territory |
Scripture tells us of Jesus walking in the porches of Bethesda and talked with a man asking him, "do you want to be made well?”
Saw this
teaching today on a God-channel. In this teaching the man, David Schott, gave history of Jerusalem
in the time of Jesus. Loving history as I do, I paid great attention to this
teaching. I also recorded it to hear again and again.
Here the Scripture: John 5:1-17 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there was a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. 5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity 38 years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well? 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed & walk.” 9 & immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, & walked. & that day was the Sabbath.
John 5:10
The Jews therefore said to him who was cured. “It is the Sabbath; it is not
lawful for you to carry your bed.” 11 He answered them, “He who made me well
said to me, ‘Take up your bed & walk.’12 Then they asked him, “Who is the
Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk?” 13 But the one who was healed
did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that
place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See you
have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.” 15 The man
departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 For
this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had
done these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father has
been working until now, and I have been working.”
You most
likely have heard and read this passage many times over the course of a year
and even more over your lifetime. In my hearing I heard Jesus walked through
the porches of Bethesda. He saw the blind, the lame and the paralyzed. But what I heard of the history at that time, I have a
whole new take on what was occurring
when Jesus appeared. Adventure in the
Gospels this morning showed me history of Israel at the time of Jesus. So
they went back to give the account when the Assyrians came to take the land.
When the Assyrians attacked or invaded, they mixed with some of the Jews .
With a mix
of things going on, the history given was of Jerusalem on a changing course.
What was set-up at that time was that men had come from the region of Greece. And these Greecian men set up colonnades around
pools of water, for these men believed that “spirits” caused the bubbling of
the water they had seen in this area. The men called the pools after the Greek god Aesclepus. The men built these regional healing centers
offering mats, and many had covers which reminded me of a tent covering. As the
Greek’s considered the offering of the bubbling waters, they built these
shallow pools to drink water from and other areas were for bathing. In this the
Greeks offered the participants chants, and fasting as a way to get their
healing. So you have this man laying there all this time. You have the lame, blind and the paralyzed. Makes you think of today, right, those blind to what is going on around them, those lame, who cannot walk very well or those paralyzed. Today people are paralyzed in fear of a virus!
This man is on his mat, and is waiting for the bubbles to appear in the water, his healing is not seen, so
year after the year….you know like masks, vaccines, more masks, lock-downs,
shut down, stay in the basement or stay by the pool till that water bubbles and
you cannot leave this country and expect to get back in: you have no
vaccination! YIKES!
So like my husband stated after hearing this
program of history about that passage, the man and those with him were in
terror. They were being tormented day in and day out for years!
Yes,
Aesclepion, the Pool of Bethseda, was in Jerusalem in 1st century
Jerusalem. A man who laid there with an infirmity of 38 years till Jesus appeared was about to see changes! In these
5 colonnades, Jesus walked in pagan territory! Created by the Grecian men, who thought spirits moved the water, paid a big price to have people come there.
John 5: 8 Jesus
said to him, “Rise, take up your bed & walk.” 9 & immediately the man
was made well, took up his bed, & walked. & that day was the Sabbath.
Yes,
religion will hold many men in laws made by man. They will rise to the occasion of
pagan attitudes to hold people in terror and torment, to do something which should not be
done to another.
Come out of
terror, torment and come to Jesus! Jesus is the Healer!
John 5:15
The man departed & told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16 For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, & sought to kill Him, because
He had done these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father
has been working until now, & I have been working.”
Jesus the
Peacemaker, was bringing peace to men and women held in terror and torment in pagan areas in Israel. He, Jesus, is greater than any
government or rule of man, greater than any pagan can write up.
Yes, I
learned a lot of what I saw and heard of the history. We must know the history
of our own nation before it is changed for good to something bitter and of
terror and torment. And that goes for any nation around the world. Lord, we
thank YOU for TRUTH!
